Week of March 14 -18

Our community helpers theme has been a great success so far!  The free choice time has been a great time to try out new activities and pretend to be helpers in the community.

Grocery Store!

The children are learning that food and dishes cost money!  They are using the play credit cards and coins to pay for their groceries, dishes, and utensils.

The children put on rubber gloves and used droppers to make a rainbow of colors. They were pretending to be scientists, using their imagination to what the liquids were and how the colors would mix together.  (I hope that this project cured the ailments that were going around in the classroom!)

In the balcony area, it has been transformed into a doctor's office.  The children took care of each other, gave each other shots, and listened to heartbeats.  At the light table they were able to investigate real x-rays.  Also, they were able to operate on Buzz Lightyear.  Some very successful surgeons!

The JK students built an airport, constructed railways, and put together tall buildings in the construction zone!

We also had our JK firefighters putting out fires all day!  And we were so happy to have Captain Fochs from the Evanston Fire Department come in and teach us about fire safety and how his job helps the community!

Officer Ron from the Evanston Police Department came in too.  He showed us his uniform, talked to us about stranger danger, and told us about how he protects us and keeps us safe.
Thanks to Macy's mom for coming in to read us a special St. Patrick's Day story!  The kids loved it and we loved the special treats in our mailboxes from Macy!!!  Thank you and we hope you enjoyed your St. Patrick's Day.
We spent some quality time outside!  We welcome Spring with open arms.  The kids were so happy to be outside on the tricycles and we will do a safety town next week if the weather stays this nice!
Centers this week focused on a variety of skills!

In the math center, the kids explored coins.  They learned to identify the penny, nickel, dime and quarter.  We made a list of what each coin looks like and the size of the coin.  We sang a song about how much each coin was worth.  Some kids were able to add multiple coins together to find the total value! We talked about all the things we can buy with money, which tied in nicely with our theme.
In the Language Arts center, the children read a book called, Helpers.  They tracked the words, found popcorn words, and made a list of community helpers!
In the Fine Motor center, the children used their small motor skills to operate on Buzz Lightyear!  This was a very fun way for them to strengthen their finger muscles, use patience, take turns, follow directions, and learn more about how a doctor operates:)

In the technology center, the children listened to Bob the Builder on tape, and they used the Leap Pads to interact with Bob the Builder, Tad the Farmer, and Thomas the Train books.

We really have been enjoying the exploration of the community helpers!  We look forward to visits from some of our parents in the next few weeks.

Because of Palio and the community helper visitors next week we will not do center activities but we will work in small groups on reading skills, and social studies projects.

Week of March 14 -18

MO WILLEMS STUDY OF THE PIGEON AND ALL HIS ADVENTURES!

The JK kids had a great time reading and acting out the pigeon stories all week.  The books have been very interactive and have made our imaginations run wild.  During work time, the children drew pictures and created a story name that they would like to see the pigeon in, including "Don't Let the Pigeon Have Friends" (he's too crazy) and "Don't Let the Pigeon Stay on Jupiter."  They finished their pictures of what would happen if we let the Pigeon drive the bus.  During circle time, we made a chart of what they like on their hot dogs and told Ms. Mira what to prepare for our hot dogs.  We read a story called, "I'm Invited to a Party." by Mo Willems to talk about how to dress, behave, and what to prepare when having a party.  The children loved the anticipation and getting ready for the hot dog party!  We made pigeon hats for ourselves and party hats for our Kindergarten friends.  Thank you to everyone for bringing in things for the party and for your help on the day of the party!  The picnic blankets and party favors were a big hit too, thanks to Hunter's mom!

Not only did we read Mo Willems books during circle time this week, the jk kids also were introduced to two more popcorn words: "on" and "for."  When we read we talk about how there are lots of popcorn words (otherwise known as sight words) that we will see pop up all over but we just haven't added them to the list yet.  These words are important for the children to identify but we are pacing ourselves to what we add on the board.  We review these words a few times a week, search for them around the room, and play blast off.  We watched a video this week during circle time too that showed our popcorn words and other sight words too.  The children really enjoyed the video and will watch clips of it during technology center as the year progresses.
The Mystery Bag continues to be passed around!  I know that it is hard for everyone to wait but I promise everyone will have a turn with the Mystery Bag.  Please be patient:)

In the art center the JK kids made pigeon hats by cutting out circles and gluing them to the base of a hat. They turned out very cute and they did a great job with their cutting skills. (see the hot dog party slideshow for pictures of these fabulous party hats!)

In the math center, the kids practiced number identification, counting, and adding numbers together with peg manipulatives.
In the language arts center, the children practiced popcorn words by playing tic tac toe.  They first read the words on the board.  Next they took turns putting colored chips over words to try to get three chips in a row.  This also taught us to work with a partner and take turns.

In the technology center, the children visited the pigeon's website and interacted with the pigeon and his friends.  You can visit this site too:  www.pigeonpresents.com

Free Choice continues to be a great opportunity to interact with each other and explore academics and theme based topics.  The JK kids are very creative with their playtime!
Upcoming Events:
Friday, March 18 is a half day of school.
Tuesday, March 22 is JK and K's Palio Day beginning at 8:45.

A Peek Ahead:

We are starting our community helpers theme! We have many new ways to explore and pretend during free choice and during centers.  This weeks centers are math, where we are exploring coins. Language Arts, where we are reading a predictable book about helpers.  Fine Motor, where the children are playing doctor and operating on Buzz Lightyear in the game Operation!  Technology, where the children are listening to a book about Bob the Builder (construction worker) and interacting with Thomas the Train,  Farmer Tad, and Bob the Builder on the Leap Pads.
