A Peek of Our Week
The "All About Me – Star Posters” were a big hit! Thank you for all of your hard work helping your child complete this assignment. The children will continue to share through next week. We have been able to share two to three a day. After the children share, the posters are hung out in the hallway for everyone to view.

Circle Time Sharing, Lily and Macy |
During "Circle Time," the students have begun to learn the zoo phonics songs, books and letter sounds. You might hear them singing, reciting, or chanting and moving to the letter sounds.
The Language Arts center this week focused on letter identification, letter sounds, and putting letters together to make words. We used an alphabet puzzle to give the children a hands on approach to the alphabet. They also worked on sequencing what comes next in the alphabet. The children did a great job working together in each group.
In the math center, the children continued with patterns and understanding that patterns extend indefiniately. They followed the teacher direction, then built their own, and demonstrated pattern making on their own.
In the Journal center, children worked on pencil grips, dictating stories about their drawings, and labeling their drawings themselves.
Everyone was introduced to the computer center this week where they worked on phonics games.
The independent art center continues to be a big hit with all the children too. The children explored with stamps, tempera paint, and dot art.
The children all looked great in their "fancy" picture day clothes! Thank you to Sara and Eli's mothers for volunteering their time. You were a great help to us:)
Over a few periods throughout the morning on Friday, the class practiced the rules of the classroom through "classroom skits." I gave examples of what to do if a friend has a toy and you wanted to play with the same toy and what you could do.
We came up with the following senarios:
Ask, "Can I have a turn?"
Your friend can respond in one of two ways: "When I am done playing with it." or "Sure."
I also acted out the bad choice if someone has something that you want. I showed them that kicking or hitting someone who has something that you want is not a good way to get what you want. Also, I showed them that running away with the toy is not a good way to respond to someone that has asked for a turn.
Finally, we went over that if a child is kicking, hitting, spitting, biting, or throwing things it is an automatic time out. I had the children echo this back to me a few times to help them remember. I tried to also explain that sometimes someone might accidentily hit you and that even if it's an accident we need to say sorry!
Our class day was very smooth and we will continue to make sure that the children are remembering how to have "SAFE BODIES" and make "RESPECTFUL CHOICES."
The Scholastic book orders for the month of September have been placed. It usually takes 7-10 business days for delivery. I will send out Octobers fliers when those books come in. If you want to get online and look at this month's selections you can do that now. October book orders will be due on October 29.
A Peek of Ahead
Next week, we will finish our "All About Me" shares. We will also focus more on the family unit and what the children want to be when they grow up!
Our centers next week will be math, language arts, journals, computers, and art.
Beginning, the week of October 11 the children will be taking home their first "Take Home Backpack" homework. There are three backpacks that will be shared with activities and directions for you and your child to do at home. Each child will keep the bag one night and bring it to school the next morning for a sharing during circle time. These "homework" bags are not meant to be difficult but rather as an example of things we do in the classroom and a way for you to work with your child in an easy and fun way.
Lower School Pumpkin carving night is October 22. We hope to see you all there.
The Roycemore School Carnival and the JK classroom Fall workshop is in the afternoon on October 29. More details to come but all children are encouraged to stay at school and celebrate. Costumes are welcome and encouraged. We will need lots of parent volunteers to keep our eyes on the JK students during the carnival. Also, I am planning a morning workshop that morning with lots of fun fall activities.
