Week of February 14-18

Happy Valentine's Day!!!!  We had such an enjoyable morning!  Thank you to Macy's mom for coming in and reading us three Valentine Day stories!

After she read to us, the children participated in a variety of Valentine's Day center activities.  The children were not required to do all of the centers that were set up like on a normal center week rather they were able to choose which one they could go to.

There was a broken hearts center.  In this center the children put together puzzle piece hearts that had  a variety of words written on them.

There was a cookie decorating center with lots of yummy frosting, sprinkles, and strawberries!

There was a popcorn word concentration game.  The children had to find two popcorn words written on the colored hearts and match them.

There was a coloring center where they children could choose from a variety Valentine Day coloring sheets.

Also, a candy sorting center.  They sorted colored hearts and also by how many words were on the heart.

Thank you to all of the parents for the materials provided for the center activities!

Thank you so much to Rhett's mom, Eliot's mom, Jazz's dad, and Max's mom!  We had so much fun at our Valentine centers.  Our high school friend, Halle helped us too.  We are so lucky to have all the materials and the classroom support.

Finally, a love bug center.  The children took one oval shape for the body, two hearts for the wings, rectangles for the legs, and lots of fun  craft materials to create a unique and special Love Bug!

On Tuesday, we got back to our regular schedule!  The children continue to enjoy a routine schedule starting the day with Free Choice.  The children are able to interact with one another, make friends, work on socialization, and work on academic skills such as reading, writing, arts and crafts, logic and sequencing and so much more!  They also enjoy the morning song to help get the wiggles out and say hello to the whole group of friends.  They all have their own unique way of dancing and moving around:)

Our morning letter has changed a little bit and thank goodness because I kept forgetting the letters and words and the kids had to help me remember ;)  When each child is the morning meeting helper they get to answer a question about themselves.  This is a way for us to chart information, write a complete sentence, and identify what a question is and what a question mark is.  Right now they are being asked, What is your favorite color?  They answer this question by putting their name on a chart underneath their favorite color... the colors are not the same typical colors there are new ones too such as magenta, copper, plum, and rose.  Then they write their answer on the board while others help them spell the word.  We use the Handwriting Without Tears language to assist the children in writing the letters too.  Also for the morning letter, we are writing how the weather feels to us.  We have learned words to describe the weather like warm, cool, cold, chilly, frigid, bitter, freezing, etc.  We continue to chart what the weather looks like: sunny, cloudy, windy, rainy, snowy, foggy and also continue to keep up with the calendar and sing about the days of the week and the how many days in the month.

The JK Friendship theme has been a very active one!  We've read lots of stories about being a good friend this week.  We most liked Rainbow Fish!  We made our own rainbow fish and put them all together like in Swimmy to work together and make one giant fish.

We learned a song about good friends playing together and acted it out as a class.  The children loved coming to the front of the class and counting the total of children playing and then singing the song and subtracting from the total!  They have been having a lot of fun with this song.   Everyone was engaged and loved singing!

The Good Friend Mystery Bag started going home this week.  The children are asked to find one special thing from home so we can get to know them a bit better and make up three clues to describe what's in the bag.  After the class has guessed the object, they ask if anyone else has something like this.

Having things in common with the JK classmates is a good way to cultivate friendships!

The JK kids have been fishing for feelings too!  They use a magnetic pole to pick up the fish in the center.  Once a fish is caught they look at the feeling that is drawn on the inside.  They tell the class the feeling and then describe a time when they have felt this way.  We talked about feeling upset when we want a toy and we couldn't have it.  Then the kids ask if anyone else has ever felt that way and the kids raise their hand.  It's nice to know that our feelings are not isolated and that our friends have had similar experiences.

3rd Grade Reading Buddies!!!!  We always love when the older Roycemore students come and read to us.

In the math center the JK kids worked on candy heart math addition problems.  The children listened to story problems and used the candy hearts from Valentine's Day to solve the problems.  After several problems they drew a picture to go with the problem.  Each child was challenged on their own level with the addition story problems.

In the language arts center, the JK kids read a story called The Three Pigs.  It was a short story were they were identifying the popcorn word "have" and looking for other words such as "three" that were seen on most pages.

In the fine motor center, the JK kids wrote popcorn words in shaving cream!  Some children also worked on the magic "c" letters.

In the technology center, the children worked on the computers playing games that reinforce phonics, math, problem solving, and reading skills.

Next week, we will continue our friendship theme.   We will be adding a few new jobs to the job chart.  We will become Good Friend Detectives too.  When another student is being a good friend to another student they will be able to give them a good friend stick.  We will count up all the good friend sticks earned at the end of each day!  We also will be writing in our journals about what makes a good friend.  The children are making good friend bracelets, writing compliments to a good friend on them and decorating them to give out at the end of the week.  They will be making good friend booklets to decorate, read and take home too!

Don't forget conferences are next week on Thursday night and Friday late morning through the afternoon!  There is no school on Friday!

Enjoy the weekend!  We will see you on Monday.
